Edward Łazikowski: W partnerstwie z materią

28.07 – 20.08.2017

otwarcie wystawy: 28.07 (piątek), godz. 18.00 / wstęp wolny

kurator: Krzysztof Jurecki

XX wieku aż do chwili obecnej.

Puszkina w Moskwie, Muzeum Sztuk Pięknych w Budapeszcie.

Edward Łazikowski: “In partnership with matter”

curated by: Krzysztof Jurecki

28.07 – 20.08.2017

I am in no doubt that Edward Łazikowski is a very important Polish artist, both an art theorist and practitioner, who has experimented with different forms of art originating from late modernism, starting in the 1970s with performance, drawing, sculpture, through original photos (the Fragtory series), and ending with unusual abstract painting (Obrazy betonowe) and most recently figurative painting in the series Zachód.

The theory of the creative process

The author is an art theorist. He has devoted three books on art theory to exploring the artistic process, which still await analysis. (…)His latest theory applies to the idea of trójment, whose theoretical model assumes capturing each quality of being in its materialisation of time past, present and future. The objective of artistic action, according to this concept, is, as far as possible, coming nearer to, or even apprenticeship with nature, combined with eliminating animalism in oneself and extending (in oneself) of spirituality.

Beginnings

(…) Łazikowski painted pictures on the border between figuration and abstraction already in 1960s. (…) The most important period for the artist’s development took place within the independent and neo-avantgarde culture of the 1970s and 1980s Łódź, a period which lasted until 1990s. An important category for the artist is drawing, the “bloodstream” of his entire work. (…) the surprise is the successful, as it turned out, idea of returning to some issues that occurred in prehistoric art. Therefore, the artist became interested not only in materials as unconventional as wood or later wood dust for photographing the objects in the series Fragtory, but also straw or newspapers.

Objects

These are projects close to the concept of wood sculpture in the modernist sense of the word. They may be small wooden structures in the form of a tower, perhaps even the Tower of Babel, or momentary, built in the space of the city or in a field (object 212A, 1992). They can be photographed and supplemented, or rather transformed, using drawing (object 214A, 1992-1994), which gives them a whole new visual value. Also important, especially in the 1980s, was creating an object which was  a “frozen” performance, where the artist was at a particular time connected with the sculpture (object 46A, 1984). (…) It is also important that, according to Łazikowski’s ideas, the object was more important than the performance (…).

Objects have their historical conditioning in the form of geometric abstraction traditions, as well as certain elements reminiscent of architecture, but most often they create a remarkable, new visual quality, also due to their impetus and impermanence (Object 229A). Other works can be combined with the tradition of ecological art, especially popular at the turn of the 1980s and the 1990s, which was interpreted as a return to the past values of art and nature.

Fragtory (photographs, objects since the 1990s)

These are not just sculptural objects that testify to the artist’s exceptional creative class. Fragtory are pictures, first black and white and then in colour, in which he documented potential structures of physical spaces as theoretical spatial models. It is a combination of controlled randomness (dust scattering) with a specific drawing, which, according to the artist’s concept, expresses seven spacetimes of different form, geometrical as well as more chaotic or diffused.

Obrazy betonowe (1990s)

The idea, through the unusual, non-artistic material of concrete, as well as deliberate destruction of these works at the time of their creation and then repairing them with wood, wire and bolts, resulted not only in a certain aesthetic contained in them, in some opposition to their appearance and materiality, but also an important culture-forming problem. The artistic goal was to show the civilisational mechanisms of “destruction” and subsequent “reconstruction”, which form an ongoing and inevitable mechanism in history.

(…) Łazikowski’s works created in the form of performances, drawings, sculptures, installations, photography and painting always sought to transcend the limits determined by the media conditions of a given technique. From the very beginning, the artist explored the realm of atypical materials, wishing to draw closer to the mystery of their existence, in order to collaborate with them harmoniously in the field of art.

All of Łazikowski’s mature work created after 1975 on the grounds of conceptual reflection and the tradition of constructivism is situated, as an original and independent phenomenon, having its parallels with land-art and arte povera. (…)
