The International Student Drawing Exhibition is a series of cyclical exhibitions organised by the Drawing Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Nicolaus Copernicus University since 2008. The first editions were nationwide, and nowadays they are international shows and are held in the biennial formula. Each of the project’s presentations is a response to the changing theme, which is always related to the area of drawing, interpreted in a very broad way. The selection of works is based on a competition. From among the entries sent in response to the open call, the jury selects the works presented at the exhibition, and awards the most interesting artistic proposals.
This year, we want to pay special attention to the manifestations of drawing which can found in virtual spaces. The rise of social media has made many people function in the virtual worlds of Instagram, Twitter or WhatsApp. In the world of art, we are also observing the phenomenon of transferring ‘life’ to the virtual world: every important exhibition should have a web page, preferably a live report from exhibition opening, it has to be properly photographed, more and more often it seems to us that we don’t have to experience something in reality, that through a small screen and appropriate hashtags we can see everything and, in a way, it is true… On the other hand, however, a hashtag perception of the world may be a trap, consisting in simplifying and showing only a sliver of reality… Can everything be shown by means of short messages? There are types of drawing that work well in this context: press drawing, satirical drawing, comics, animation. But what about works created with a virtuoso drawing technique, performative works happening here and now, or extended installations – doesn’t hashtagging deprive them of their essential qualities?
The organizational work on the exhibition #RYSOWAĆ was disturbed by an emergency situation – the coronavirus epidemic, which entailed various restrictions, also affecting the work of cultural institutions. Special precautions were also implemented by the Rector of the Nicolaus Copernicus University, cancelling all events (including exhibitions) conducted by university units. This forced the organisers to change the way works are presented. The exhibition, which was to take place physically in the rooms of the Wozownia Art Gallery, was moved entirely to the Internet space. Thus, it will be exclusively virtual – it will be shown both on a special website and on all social platforms administered by the Drawing Department of the Nicolaus Copernicus University and the Wozownia Art Gallery.
These new circumstances have given the slogan of this year’s edition – #RYSOWAĆ – a completely new meaning and context…

This year 60 artists from the following art schools qualified for the exhibition: Academy of Art and Design in Kharkiv, Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, Academy of Art in Szczecin, Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, Collegium da Vinci in Poznań, Kibbutz Teacher Training College, The following universities are present in Poland: Tel Aviv University of Technology and Art in Israel, St. Petersburg Academy of Art and Industry, Poznan University of Arts, Jan Evangelist Purkyn University in Usta nad Labem (Czech Republic), Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, University of Rzeszow, University of Zielona Gora, Silesian University in Cieszyn.
