Wystawa Anny Baumgart pt. Terytorium Komanczów w Galerii Sztuki Wozownia to przegląd najważniejszych filmów artystki z ostatnich lat.

Anna Baumgart – artystka postkonceptualna, reżyserka i scenografka. Doktor sztuki. Wystawiała w kraju i zagranicą, m.in.: w Brooklyn Museum of Art, NKB i Kunstwerke w Berlinie, Museum On The Seam w Izraelu, Casino Luksemburg w Luksemburgu, CCA w Moskwie, Zachęcie – Narodowej Galeria Sztuki oraz Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej Zamek Ujazdowski w Warszawie.

Anna Baumgart

The Comanche Territory

14 October – 20 November 2016

Exhibition opening: Friday 14 October, 6 pm

The exhibition of Anna Baumgart titled The Comanche Territory and held in the Wozownia Art Gallery presents a selection of the most important recent films by the artist. The presentation offers an insight into some of her artistic activities by placing them in the context of her creative strategy. The strategy in question consists in addressing difficult issues of history and memory (to name just these two), and creating film stories which rearrange documentary material and blend facts with fiction.

The exhibition owes its name to the book of the same title by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, a book which offers a reflection about the experiences of a war correspondent. The term denotes dangerous places and no-go areas. The ‘Comanche territories’ are places ridden with immense tension, where one feels constantly under threat. In such conditions it is inescapably impossible to observe the surrounding environment in a comprehensive manner. Even though composed of snapshots, the overall picture of things is nonetheless much more truthful and suggestive.

In her works, Baumgart ventures out to historical and cultural spaces which are particularly risky to explore. The art historian Andrzej Turowski defined her area of interest as small niches of ‘big issues’. Baumgart remains open to marginalised issues. By changing perspectives and taking different vantage points she undermines the dominant ways of how reality is perceived and how it is distorted by myths, stereotypes and cultural fallacies. In her films, the artist touches upon the problem of knowing and understanding, which is not based on mere facts. She subscribes to the view that our vision of the world and the future is shaped not only by events, stories, documents or symbols, but also by understatements and images which are formed on the basis of various snippets of information.

The exhibition includes the iconic tale The Conquerors of the Sun about the propaganda train from Moscow to Berlin of the year 1920, and the film narratives about memory and forgetting (Fresh Cherries with Appendix, and Synekdoche). Another important element of the exhibition is one of the most recent video works of the artist: The dark matter of art (2015), which is a tale about the contemporary artworld and the public (un)awareness of the artists who did not make it to be successful with the media. The title comes from a phrase coined by the American artist and art theoretician Gregory Scholette. The term refers to the phenomenon of a very select group of art stars who grab the attention of audiences and critics and leave the rest markedly inconspicuous and overlooked as ‘the dark matter of art’. The presence and the work of the commonly overlooked artists is nonetheless indispensable, since they are the very lifeblood of the whole system. In the film, Baumgart asks eminent Polish art scholars to comment on the issue and portrays ten artists from Sopot, who are also confronted with the question of how being on the margins translates into their day-to-day life.

The common trait of Baumgart’s works is the play with the conventions of documentary films. They are made of pieces of already existing materials (found for instance in film documentaries or feature films), as well as newly prepared images which only resemble the reportage genre. The films blend facts, myths, visions and fantasies and are not meant as a record, but they are a result of the dialogue between the past and personal experience. The film scholar Iwona Kurz argues that Baumgart plays the role of an active and critical mnemon, i.e. a person who is responsible for remembering in the given society.

Anna Baumgart is a post-conceptual artist, film director and set designer with a doctoral degree in arts. In 1995 she won the prize for the best artistic debut from the Voivode of Gdańsk. She has received numerous scholarships from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Foundation for Culture. She has exhibited her works in Poland and abroad, most notably in the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the NKB and Kunstwerke in Berlin, the Museum On The Seam in Israel, the Casino Luxemburg in Luxemburg, the CCA in Moscow, the Zachęta National Gallery of Art and the Zamek Ujazdowski Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw. Her works have become part of prestigious art collections, including Hauser & Wirth, FRAC Poitou-Charentes, the Zachęta National Gallery of Art, the Art Museum of Silesia and the European Parliament, and shown at numerous film, video art and document festivals. The film Fresh Cherries (2010) was presented at Videobrasil in São Paulo, Videonale w Bonn, at the Era Nowe Horyzonty WATCH DOCS Festival and the Impakt Festival. It received the award of the audience for the best video film at the Loop Festival in Barcelona. The Conquerors of the Sun  was shown in the Jewish Museum in New York, the European Media Art Festival in Osnabrück, the Mostrainvideo in Milan and the Nowe Horyzonty Festival in Wrocław.  The artist received the invitation to present this work at the government-funded Manifesta 10 in St Petersburg, but turned it down in protest against Putin’s invasion on Ukraine.
